The Barolo "Ginestra Casa Maté" from the Elio Grasso winery is a splendid example of aromatic finesse and elegance well integrated with the characteristic structure and austerity that represents the typical expression of wines from the prestigious Piedmontese territory. The winery is family-run and was born from Elio's idea in the 1980s to leave his steady job in Turin to dedicate himself to the life of the fields and the production of Baroli. This led to the creation of great labels, such as the "Ginestra Casa Maté", a great red produced from Nebbiolo grapes coming from the Ginestra cru, one of the most representative hills of the entire Monforte d'Alba territory. This area historically produces reds that are more elegant and easier to drink compared to the Barolo from the nearby Serralunga d'Alba. More feminine expressions, less tannic and more focused on fruit.
The "Casa Maté" Barolo Ginestra from the Elio Grasso winery comes from the Ginestra cru, a three-hectare vineyard facing south and located at an altitude of about 350 meters. The vines, about 40 years old, are cultivated using the typical Guyot system on medium-textured calcareous soils tending towards clay.the winemaking process begins with alcoholic fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with frequent daily pump-overs. It is then aged for about 30 months in Slavonian oak barrels of 25 hectoliters according to the traditional winemaking style historically used for wines destined for Barolo. Once bottled, it continues its refinement in the bottle for another 8-10 months before being marketed.
The “Ginestra Casa Maté” Elio Grasso is a wine with an intense ruby red color, tending towards garnet with aging. On the nose, it presents a whirlwind of intense sensations of ripe red fruit, such as cherry and raspberry, dried flowers, mint, and dark spices. It showcases a massive and elegant body, still evolving. It has width and depth and envelops the palate with great style. The tannin still bites, and the freshness is beautifully bright. To be tried in a few years to fully enjoy its perfect expressive maturity. Future champion!
